African Monkeys

About forty species of monkeys live in Africa. The most common are the Guenons with long tails.Colobuses are some of the most graceful and beautiful monkeys, with their long sleek coats and sweeping tufted tails.
They live mainly in trees along the forest edge and rarely come down to the ground. The only time the come down is when they go and get the fallen fruits and nuts.Unfortunately Colobuses are killed for their furs. Now lots of the species are rare or endangered.Another threat to monkeys is habitat loss from all the clearance to build buildings and roads.Mangabeys are related to Baboons. They have strong jaws and powerful teeth to open hard nuts and seeds.Mangabeys also eat fruits, leaves, fungi, insects, lizards and baby birds. The Mangabeys are lighter than Baboons, with tails longer than their bodies to help them balance in treetops.Mangabeys are mostly black grey or brown.
